San Francisco

The city of San Francisco has a long and rich history. Native Americans have lived in the area that would late become the city for over 10,000 to 20,000 years. The region was initially inhabited by the Yelamu tribe, which were associated with the Ohlone Indian tribal group. Early European explorers and settlers usually found the region’s characteristic rainy and foggy weather disruptive to their explorations: It has been reported that both Sir Francis Drake and Juan Cabrillo missed landing in the San Francisco bay due to bad weather. It would be the Spaniards who would discover the area in 1770, and claim it in the name of Spain. Six years later, Juan Bautista established the Presidio of San Francisco and the Mission San Francisco de Asis named for the Catholic saint, St. Francis of Assisi.

With the discovery of gold, San Francisco established itself as a major mining town, and suffered the typical growing pains that many fledgling cities experienced. The California gold rush in the mid-nineteenth century created a population boom in the area, leading to the creation San Francisco county in 1850. The city continued to grow and by the 1950s, it was the center of the counter-culture movement and it became the magnet for hippies and the flower children of the 1960s. The eighties and nineties saw the city grow exponentially yet again, making it one of America’s most popular cities.
