After the second world war, the city became a haven for the Beat Generation, drawing poets and beatniks from around the country, and the city became the center for the counter-culture in the 1960s.
The arts and music are well represented in San Francisco. The city is home to numerous museums and galleries, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Asian Art Museum and the Palace of the Legion of Honor. The theatre arts are also well-represented, as well. Visitors and residents can enjoy an evening of the performing arts- the San Francisco Ballet is one of the country’s oldest ballet companies. The city is also the proud host of the American Conservatory Theatre. Founded in 1965, it is one of the state’s leading theatre.
